  4. This application is shareware - you may evaluate it for 30 days. If you
  5. continue to use it beyond this time then you must register!

  7. Introduction
  8. ------------
  9. Word Search allows you to create a word search based on words that you
  10. supply. You can control the size of the grid used, the fonts and border
  11. display.
  12.  
  13. Using Word Search
  14. -----------------
  15. Load in the normal RISC-OS way. The main display will open, with a tool pane
  16. on the left side. Load Acorns !Help application for a summary of what the
  17. icons do, although many of them are self evident.
  18.  
  19. Borders
  20. -------
  21. NB. If you are using RISC_OS 2 then you will NOT be able to use borders.
  22.  
  23. Clicking on the Border icon button shows a list of available bordrs. These
  24. are read from the Borders directory with the main Word Search directory.
  25. You may add your own borders here, but they MUST be draw files.
  26.  
  27. If you have a directory of your own with borders you should use the
  28. DIRECTORY PATH icon on the tool pane to set Word Search to scan this
  29. directory.

  31. You can, if you are using a single draw file, simply drag and drop the file
  32. onto the main display.
  33.  
  34. Patterns
  35. --------
  36. In a normal grid each space is filled by a letter. However you can 'blank'
  37. out squares so that they are not used - building up a crude picture. To do
  38. this click on the PATTERN icon and click on the small boxes inside the new
  39. window to turn off/on boxes. Then close this window, open the main text
  40. entry window (ie where you type in your words) and turn on the USE PATTERN
  41. option - finally select New Grid button.

  43. Menu Options
  44. ------------
  45. A couple of menu options need explaining:
  46. a) Reset path - if you have changed the Border directory path (see above)
  47.    then selecting this will reset it
  48. b) Save as default - whatever you have created so far will be saved as the
  49.    default file. Each time you load Word Search it will begin with this work
  50.    already on screen. If you later wish to remove this open the Word Search
  51.    directory and delete the file called AZfault.

  53. Registration
  54. ------------
  55. The registration fee for Word Search is 5.99 - this will entitle you to be
  56. kept up to date about upgrades as they become available as well as removing
  57. the 'unregistered' windows that pop up. You will also receive a wide range
  58. of new borders to use, and Do_Search which allows you to do your crosswords
  59. on screen. To register make a cheque to M. Smith for 5.99 and print clearly
  60. your address as well as who you want the program to be registered to. Also
  61. write the name of the application on your note (ie Word Search).

  91. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  92. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  93. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3. I have not tried them on a
  94. RISC PC, but they ought to be ok!
  95.  
  96. Geography:
  97. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  98.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  99.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  100.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  101.   & Africa.
  102. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  103.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  104.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  105. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  106.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  107. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  108.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  109. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  110.   with Key Satge 3 geography.
  111.  
  112. Science:
  113. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  114.   against the clock.
  115. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  116.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  117.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  118.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  119. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  120.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  121.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  122.   different each time they are printed.
  123. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  124.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  125.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  126.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  127.   also be produced.
  128. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  129. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  130.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  131. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  132.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  133. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  134.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  136. Word Puzzles:
  137. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  138.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  139. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  140.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  141.   on screen
  142. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  143.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  144. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  145.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  146. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  147.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  148. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint feature provided.
  149. * Bottle - Hangman type game, but with bottles. Hints also provided.
  150. * Cloze - Removes words (user can determine how many) from a passage of
  151.   text. User must then reconstruct the entire text by entering words into
  152.   gaps in the text. Add your own passages of text easily. Summary can be
  153.   printed.

  155. Picture Puzzles:
  156. * Blocksaw - Jigsaw type application, using blocks for the pieces. Accepts
  157.   sprite and draw files. Size of the grid can be varied to cover a wide
  158.   range of abilities.
  159. * Tile - Picture is broken into a series of tiles, and then the tiles mixed
  160.   up. The picture must be recreated by swapping tiles. Uses sprite or draw
  161.   files; allows the number of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty
  162.   levels.
  163. * Slide - Sliding block puzzle. Uses sprite or draw files; allows the number
  164.   of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty levels.
  165. * Rows n Cols - Recreate a picture (either sprite or draw) by sliding rows
  166.   or columns into their correct positions.
  167.  
  168. Miscellaneous:
  169. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game for up to three players. Database
  170.   can be easily modified to include your own words.
  171. * Multiple Choice (General) - Multiple choice quiz, some with pictures. Many
  172.   general knowledge topics covered. Editor also available so you can create
  173.   your own tests.
  174. * Multiple Choice Maths - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  175.   pictures) covering GCSE Maths. Time limits can be set.
  176. * ArcMedia (Cats) - A simple hypermedia system on the Cat Family. Designed
  177.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. 
  178. * Word Tester - Tests knowledge of the correct word for numbers from one to
  179.   one hundred in various languages. Played against the clock.
  180. * Facemaker - Use your computer to design a face, then either print or
  181.   export as a sprite file.
  182. * Desktop Turtle - Create on screen graphics with a 'Turtle' within a
  183.   desktop window. Wide range of commands supported including numeric
  184.   variables as well as sprites and sounds. Other features include variable
  185.   line thickness, auto symmetry and backdrops.
  186. * Birthday & Today. Produce an A4 sized poster on events taking place in
  187.   history either on your Birthday or any particular day. Information
  188.   displayed includes Famous Birthdays on the same day, events, films, songs
  189.   and sporting events. Variety of borders/watermarks provided.
  190. * School CV & CV+. School leavers (CV) or sixth form students (CV+) can
  191.   quickly create a CV by entering data. Layouts can be chosen from a
  192.   predefined set, and fonts changed. DTP style output without having to use
  193.   a DTP application.
